MIRI: Celebrations for Miri City Day have been cancelled in view of the Covid-19 pandemic and Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that will be in force until June 9.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said this in a press release yesterday in conjunction with Miri’s elevation as a city on May 20, 2005.

“Since March 18, Malaysia has declared the Movement Control Order (MCO) and later on extended it to CMCO.

“During this period, all events and activities are cancelled to avoid crowding and to ensure the safety of everyone.

“Despite the enthusiasm and eagerness to celebrate the auspicious day, we have to cancel the celebrations for our Miri City Day and Miri City 15th anniversary that would have been a joyous affair in celebrating the many progress and achievements in Miri.

“The latest landmark would be the new Miri City Hall that had been scheduled for completion by December 24 this year. However, the progress has been delayed due to the MCO,” said Yii.

Nevertheless, he added, a celebration will be held by the city council at a later date when the circumstances permit.

“In the mean time, I wish all Mirians to stay safe and healthy during this difficult period and we shall emerge from the pandemic stronger and more resilient,” said Yii.
