MIRI: An illegal dumping ground in an open space behind the new Sunday Market in Lutong will be cleared and turned into a parking space for traders and customers, said Miri mayor Adam Yii.

In expressing sadness at the irresponsible attitude of those who dumped their household waste at the site, Yii said such practice is unfortunately still a problem among the public.

“Miri City Council (MCC) has done its best to educate the community and change their mindset to love the environment and maintain the city’s cleanliness.

“Unfortunately, despite the many efforts and warnings by the council, the issue of illegal garbage disposal is still a problem, and MCC has to bear the cost of cleaning it up,” he said after visiting the site yesterday.

He called on the public to be the eyes and ears of the council in reporting acts of illegal dumping, to enable action to be taken against the culprits.

On turning the site into a parking space, Yii said MCC will work out a budget and hope to carry out the project this year.

“This (project) will ease the traffic flow and reduce road congestion in the area during the market operating hours on Sunday.

“In the meantime, I urge road users and the public to observe the traffic flow in the area and to avoid indiscriminate parking,” he added.
