Lee (seated, sixth left) joins guests and community leaders for a group photo. MIRI (March 7): The appointment of community leaders reflects the trust placed in them by the government and the people, and carries a responsibility that must carried out diligently, said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin. The Senadin assemblyman described grassroots leaders as an important bridge between the government and the people, enabling authorities to better understand the needs and concerns of local communities. Speaking at a Chinese New Year luncheon by the Miri Chinese Community Leaders Association here, he expressed appreciation for the long-standing contributions of community leaders who have worked tirelessly in their respective neighbourhoods. “Community leaders have played significant roles in coordinating community affairs, assisting residents in resolving problems and organising activities that help foster unity and harmony within the community,” he said. Lee added that the feedback and communication provided by community leaders allow the public to better understand government policies and directions, while also enabling the government to hear and respond to the voices of the grassroots. He noted that many issues at the grassroots level are first brought to the attention of community leaders, including clogged drains, potholes, damaged streetlights and poorly maintained public facilities. “While these issues may appear minor, they directly affect the daily lives and safety of the people,” he said. As such, he encouraged community leaders to take the initiative to assist residents and promptly relay issues to the relevant authorities so that solutions can be implemented more efficiently. He also emphasised the importance of communication and cooperation among grassroots leaders to ensure responsibilities are carried out effectively. Present at the event were Pujut assemblyman mayor Adam Yii, Miri Resident Galong Luang; and other guests.

MIRI (March 13): A substantial portion of his constituency development funds has been channelled towards education through the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), said Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew. He said that since being elected as Piasau assemblyman in 2016 until 2025, more than RM13.3 million has been allocated to schools through various RTP projects, reflecting his focus on improving school infrastructure and creating better learning environments. “Schools are very important because they represent our future generation. That is why we pay special attention to school children and the development of school facilities,” he said during a visit to SMK Luak and SK Kampung Luak. According to Ting, the effort is aimed at ensuring students have a conducive learning environment while also supporting teachers and school administrations in delivering quality education. He also noted that the Sarawak government has consistently placed education among its key priorities, citing initiatives such as the provision of free tertiary education as part of the state’s commitment. “At the end of the day, education is the foundation for the future. By strengthening our schools today, we are preparing the next generation to lead Sarawak forward,” he added. At SMK Luak, Ting inspected an ongoing project involving the construction of drains near the school’s football court. The RM100,000 project, which commenced on Dec 22, 2025, is expected to be completed within six months, around mid-June this year. Once completed, the drain will help divert rainwater away from the school compound and reduce the risk of flooding. Another RTP project at SMK Luak is the installation of a roof over a netball court at a cost of RM250,000. The project is expected to commence by the end of March and be completed within six months. Ting later visited two RTP 2025 projects at SK Kampung Luak — a futsal court and a roofed open multipurpose hall. The futsal court was built at a cost of RM120,000, while the multipurpose hall was upgraded with a roof at a cost of RM80,000. Meanwhile, Ting also presented Minor Rural Projects (MRP) cheques to both schools.

Gerawat makes a point during the meeting in Kuching. MIRI (March 13): Passenger traffic at Mulu Airport has more than doubled its designed annual capacity, prompting discussions on a runway expansion to sustain growing tourism at Gunung Mulu National Park. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the airport terminal was originally built to handle around 50,000 passengers a year, but recorded over 71,000 arrivals in 2025 alone. “The existing runway stretches approximately 1,507 metres, and upgrading it has become necessary to accommodate larger aircraft and higher traffic volumes as the park’s popularity grows,” the Mulu assemblyman said in a Facebook post. Gerawat said he had earlier chaired a meeting in Kuching with representatives from the Transport Ministry and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad to advance the proposal. He also expressed appreciation for the agencies’ commitment to carrying out rehabilitation and upgrading works to ensure passenger safety and comfort. However, he noted that the main challenge lies in the logistical aspect of bringing heavy machinery and construction materials into the remote Mulu area, which is located far inland. “Therefore, this meeting focused on discussing the best methods to ensure the transportation process and project implementation can be carried out more effectively,” he said. Representatives from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and the state Transport Ministry were also present at the discussions, which centred on ensuring the project could be implemented effectively to support the area’s continued tourism growth. A Unesco World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park is among Sarawak’s most celebrated eco-tourism destinations, known for its towering limestone karst formations, vast cave systems and exceptional biodiversity.

MIRI (March 16): Sarawak is positioning itself to tap into the emerging low-altitude economy, with plans to explore opportunities in drone logistics, smart city applications and technology-driven industries. State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said his ministry is actively laying the ground work to develop the sector, which has been globally recognised as a major future economic frontier. “With rapid technological development, the low-altitude economy is gradually moving from concept to industrial application and is widely regarded as a new engine of economic growth,” Lee said. His speech was delivered by his representative Jeffrey Phang during the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) annual general meeting here yesterday. Lee explained that the sector covers a wide range of applications, including drone-based logistics, environmental monitoring, agricultural technology and smart urban management. To further explore the industry’s potential, he said an aviation safety seminar titled ‘Advancing the Low Altitude Economy: Safe, Smart and Sustainable Growth’ will be held in Miri later this month. The seminar will be organised in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Curtin University Malaysia, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss regulatory frameworks, safety standards and industry development. “The initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to position Sarawak at the forefront of new economic sectors driven by technology and innovation,” he said. Lee also encouraged businesses in Miri to explore opportunities within the low-altitude economy, noting that early participation would place local enterprises in a strong position as the industry expands. Apart from the initiative, the Senadin assemblyman also highlighted improvements in regional connectivity through Sarawak’s own airline Air Borneo, as well as the planned expansion of Miri Airport to support future economic and tourism growth. He said these developments will strengthen Miri’s role as a key economic centre in northern Sarawak, while supporting the state’s development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030. Among those present were deputy minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia and Miri MP Chiew Choon Man; Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Councillor Kelvin Chia who represented Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting; and MCCCI chairman Ling Chiong Sing.

Lee (left) presents the cheque to Goh, as Henry (fourth right) and others look on. MIRI (March 16): Close cooperation between parents and schools is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment and ensuring the holistic development of students, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. “The success of a school does not depend solely on the efforts of teachers, but the support and active involvement of parents. “Strong cooperation, good communication and mutual respect between parents and teachers are key to the success of a school,” he said when officiating the SK St Joseph Miri Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) annual general meeting (AGM) last Saturday. He said the PTA plays an important role as the bridge between parents and the school, as well as a strategic partner in supporting the school’s various programmes and initiatives. “Such cooperation helps create a more conducive learning environment, and supports the overall development of students. We do not want to produce students who excel academically, but also individuals who are balanced in terms of physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual development.” He added that any issues or challenges between parents and the school should be addressed through open discussion, mutual understanding, and a spirit of consensus for the common good. Lee also encouraged parents to continue supporting programmes organised by the school, whether through moral support or contributions they are able to provide. He added the PTA could also play an important role in assisting the school in organising and financing the participation of students in competitions at higher levels. “Support should not only focus on academic achievements, but also on sports, co-curricular activities, and other programmes that can help build students’ confidence and potential,” he said. During the event, Lee also presented a RM10,000 allocation for the school to carry out its annual activities. Also present were SK St Joseph Miri headmaster Henry Edward Tarang and PTA chairman Goh Ser Seng.

Ting (front, seventh right), flanked by Augustine (on Ting’s right) and Cheong, joins others for a photo call in front of the centre. MIRI (March 15): St Columba’s Church here marked another milestone in its 103-year history with the establishment of its first Care Ministry Centre to support senior citizens in the community. The centre was officially launched by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, in the presence of former Assistant Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei The Rt Revd Solomon Cheong and The Revd Augustine Saidi. In his address yesterday, Ting said the initiative reflects the church’s commitment to caring for senior citizens, particularly those who spend long hours alone at home. “A centre like this provides a place for seniors to meet friends, share stories and enjoy companionship, especially when their children are busy with work,” he said. Ting, who is also the Piasau assemblyman, noted that meaningful interaction such as listening and simple conversations can have a therapeutic effect, as families today often have limited time to spend with elderly members. “Sometimes people just need someone to listen, and that alone can already be a form of therapy,” he said. The centre will offer various activities including light exercises, games, singing, spiritual sessions and social activities to promote both physical and mental wellbeing among senior citizens. Ting said such initiatives could help ensure that elderly individuals do not feel isolated, while shared activities could foster friendships and provide emotional support. Responding to a request for vertical vibration machines, used to help strengthen leg muscles, he pledged RM10,000 to purchase two units. He also commended the church for its community-based initiative and announced an additional RM8,000 to support the centre’s activities for senior citizens.

Chiew (right) and Yeo pose for the camera during the meeting. MIRI (March 14): Efforts to attract more South Korean tourists to Sabah and Sarawak were a key topic during a recent meeting between Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man and Ambassador of South Korea to Malaysia Yeo Seung-bae. Chiew said the meeting followed up on their first meeting in 2023 after the Asean Parliament Forum in Jeju Island, focusing on strategies to increase tourist arrivals, particularly to northern Sarawak including Miri. “Attracting more tourists to this region is one of my main priorities, and this discussion is an important step towards bringing more Korean visitors to northern Sarawak,” he said in a statement on Friday. He noted that South Korean travellers often seek destinations that offer a peaceful escape and value nature, making Sabah and Sarawak’s ecotourism offerings ideal. Highlighted attractions included Niah National Park, Lambir Hills National Park, and Gunung Mulu National Park, home to one of the world’s largest cave chambers. Chiew also emphasised Miri’s accessibility, with a 30 to 45-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu and multiple daily connections, making it an ideal extension for Korean tourists visiting Sabah. The ambassador shared insights on South Korea’s corporate incentive travel culture, presenting opportunities for Malaysian tour operators to develop packages targeting these high-value travellers. Discussions also touched on collaboration with South Korea’s entertainment and K-pop industry, including potential concerts in Miri. Additionally, Chiew welcomed news that South Korean producer Lee Sang Chan will film the feature movie ‘Distinct: Becoming Sarawak’ in the state, citing Sarawak’s harmony among diverse cultures, races, and religions. The project is expected to showcase Sarawak’s attractions to a wider global audience, particularly in South Korea.

Lee helps fit a helmet on a motorcyclist during the road safety campaign. MIRI (March 14): Rear-end collisions are the most common type of road accident in Sarawak, accounting for 28 per cent of all crashes recorded in the state, while human error remains the root cause of nearly nine out of every 10 incidents. State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said statistics released by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters showed that about 85 per cent of road accidents, from minor collisions to fatal crashes, stem from negligence and careless behaviour by road users. “Beyond rear-end collisions, loss of vehicle control due to excessive speed or skidding is the second most frequent cause at 24 per cent, followed by side-swipe collisions at junctions, which account for roughly 15 per cent of cases. “Head-on collisions and minor side scrapes made up the remainder, further reinforcing the pattern of driver-induced incidents,” he said. Locally, figures from the Traffic Police Station at Miri District Police Headquarters showed that 524 property-damage accidents were recorded in Miri between January and February this year. This marks an increase of 13 cases, or about 2.5 per cent, from 511 cases recorded in the same period last year. Fatal accidents claimed six lives over the two-month period, mirroring the toll recorded during the same stretch in 2025. Speaking during the Road Safety Campaign for Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 at a Petronas petrol station in Permyjaya on Friday, Lee urged motorists to exercise greater caution as the festive season approaches. “Traffic volumes typically surge during major celebrations such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Gawai, substantially elevating the risk of accidents for those who fail to practise safe driving habits. “Through this campaign, we want to remind all road users to return to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya safely. Leave safely and come back safely,” he said. During the campaign, the ministry distributed specially designed ‘duit raya’ packets carrying road safety messages, including reminders to wear seatbelts and helmets, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, obey traffic signals and adhere to speed limits. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Miri inspected 15,581 vehicles between January and March, issuing 3,010 notices for various traffic offences during the same period. The campaign was organised by the state Transport Ministry in collaboration with the JPJ, Royal Malaysia Police, the Sarawak Road Safety Council and the Miri Divisional Road Safety Committee. Also present were Miri district officer Siti Rohanie Yusof, JPJ Miri branch chief Yusuf Andan, and inspector G. Visvanathan Guna Cekeren.

Chiew (sixth left) and Mohd Roslan (sixth right) in a photocall with Motac personnel and stakeholders at the engagement session. MIRI (March 15): Homestay and Kampungstay operators in Sarawak generated RM9.2 million in income in 2025, marking a 37 per cent increase compared with RM6.7 million recorded the previous year. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man said the earnings came from 74 registered homestay clusters involving 924 operators with 1,902 rooms under the Malaysia Homestay Experience Programme (PPHM), as well as four Kampungstay clusters involving seven operators. He said the increase reflected the ministry’s continuous efforts to strengthen the tourism sector in the state, including human capital development among frontline tourism workers and licensed industry players. “Community participation in the sector has been encouraging, with involvement from both urban and rural areas,” he said in his speech at the engagement session between Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) and Sarawak tourism stakeholders and industry players here on Saturday. According to Chiew, the growth in revenue was also driven by higher visitor arrivals under PPHM. He noted that in 2024, Sarawak recorded 52,927 domestic visitors and 3,046 international visitors under PPHM, while in 2025 the figures rose to 65,892 domestic visitors and 3,832 international visitors. “This represents an increase of 24 per cent for domestic visitors and 25.8 per cent for international visitors in 2025 compared with the previous year,” he said. He added that the ministry had also undertaken various initiatives to further strengthen tourism in Sarawak, including upgrading tourism facilities, ecotourism sites and heritage locations. Chiew said that a total of 21 Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programmes (PPUN) from 2024 to 2025, amounting to RM4.6 million, have been allocated to the Sarawak government, including local authorities. “For 2026, the Sarawak Motac office has received 23 PPUN applications from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak. Apart from that, nine projects approved from the 11th to the 13th Malaysia Plans, totalling RM47 million, have been allocated to the Sarawak government for the construction of tourism facilities,” he said. On the engagement session, Chiew said it served as an important two-way platform to exchange views, align directions and strengthen strategic cooperation between the government and tourism, arts and culture stakeholders in Sarawak. He said the session involved participants from companies, associations, institutions and entrepreneurs, covering a range of tourism, arts and cultural matters, including traditional games, dance and martial arts. Chiew pointed out that this year would be a crucial year for the national tourism industry in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). To ensure the success of the campaign, he said the ministry, together with Tourism Malaysia, would continue to strengthen strategic cooperation with the government, private sector and non-governmental organisations. “The success of Visit Malaysia 2026 cannot be borne by the government alone. It requires the active participation and sustained commitment of all parties, including hotel operators, travel agents, airlines, tourism product operators and local communities,” he said. He stressed that the National Tourism Policy focuses not only on increasing visitor arrivals, but also on attracting quality visitors who stay longer and spend more, in order to build a more competitive tourism industry. “This includes a strategic shift towards experiential tourism, offering high-value products to encourage overnight stays, as well as strengthening community-based tourism. “Attention must also be given to readiness in welcoming domestic and international visitors, including good infrastructure, high standards of cleanliness and the development of new tourism products and special interest packages,” he added. Also present at the engagement session were senior director of Motac’s Domestic and Events Division Mohd Roslan Abdullah, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Rubiah Tul’adwiyah Md Yusof, and director of the Package Development Division Zuraini Abdul Ghani.

MIRI (March 15): The upgrading works on the road linking Logan Entassan to Benawa in Marudi are progressing well and are expected to ease long-standing access problems faced by villagers in the area. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the project involves upgrading a 4.2-kilometre stretch of road that has remained unrepaired for many years, making daily travel difficult for residents. “The upgrading works were carried out following requests from residents of Kampung Hizrah, as the road serves as the main access route for children travelling to SK Benawa and for students commuting to secondary schools in Marudi,” he said after inspecting the project site on Saturday. According to the Mulu assemblyman, the project was funded through an allocation of RM900,000 under the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) fund. Gerawat (standing sixth left) with residents of Kampung Hizrah during the site visit. He added that he has instructed the Public Work Department (JKR) to prepare a proposal to upgrade the road to a tarred standard, noting that the process would involve coordination with other agencies, including the Land and Survey Department. “As a people’s representative, my commitment is to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and their needs addressed,” he said. “While development may take time, we will continue to improve facilities step by step for the benefit of the people,” he added.

(From centre) Rosey, Dr Chen and Dr Kho visit one of the booths during the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration. MIRI (March 8): Women working in the healthcare sector play a crucial role in sustaining the healthcare system and must be supported through initiatives that promote their wellbeing and leadership opportunities, said Datuk Rosey Yunus. The State Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development said greater recognition and support should be given to women, particularly those serving in the healthcare workforce. “We must also recognise the many women within our healthcare workforce as they lead, care, make critical decisions and balance professional excellence with responsibilities at home,” she said. Rosey said this in her speech at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration organised by Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Miri yesterday. The Bekenu assemblywoman also highlighted the growing challenges faced by women today. Among the concerns, she said, are mental health issues, the rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, economic pressures on working mothers and single parents, as well as issues related to safety and digital wellbeing. “These challenges reflect the lived experiences of many women, including mothers who delay their own health check-ups to prioritise their children and healthcare workers balancing demanding professional duties with family responsibilities,” she said. She stressed that women’s health must remain a priority, encompassing not only on maternal care but also preventive screening, mental health support, reproductive health education and chronic disease management. “In a healthcare setting such as this, the message carries even greater meaning,” she said, adding that a “future-ready society” is one that values women’s health, safety, education and economic participation. Meanwhile, BMC Miri Medical Director Dr Richard Chen said the celebration not only recognises the achievements of women but also highlights the challenges they face in today’s environment. “Today, we celebrate not only the achievements of women, but also acknowledge the challenges many continue to face, from rising healthcare concerns and mental health pressures to work-life balance and the need for safe, supportive environments,” he said. Chen noted that the event’s theme, “Give to gain. Every story matters. Every woman counts,” reflects the experiences of many women encountered in healthcare settings. “Every day, we meet women who prioritise their families over their own health, working mothers balancing multiple responsibilities, and young women navigating stress in a rapidly changing world. Behind every statistic is a real story,” he said. He stressed that women’s healthcare extends beyond maternity services and includes preventive screening, mental health support, chronic disease management and access to quality and compassionate treatment. “As a healthcare provider, we are committed not only to treating illness but also to promoting awareness and early intervention,” he said. Chen said the collaboration between BMC, the Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) in organising the event reflects the importance of partnerships between private institutions and public agencies in advancing gender equality and family wellbeing. Also present was BMC Miri chairman Dr Matthew Kho Hion Woo.

Chiew (right) in a discussion with Ching regarding the possibility of reopening Coco Cabana. MIRI (March 9): The beaches here exhibit strong potential to be further developed into vibrant tourism destinations, capable of attracting visitors and becoming key business hubs. According to Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man, the city’s long coastline provides a natural advantage that should be able to position it alongside other well-known coastal tourism destinations such as Kota Kinabalu, Port Dickson and Langkawi. “Miri is a beautiful coastal city, and our beaches are wonderful places for people to take a stroll, relax and enjoy the sunset – among many other seaside activities. “This said, proper management and maintenance of these beaches are important to ensure that they continue to grow as must-visit attractions. “Enhancing their commercial value is also important, through the development of supporting amenities such as cafés, restaurants and retail outlets, as well as expansion of recreational offerings such as jet-skiing, snorkelling and banana boat rides. “All these would further boost the attractiveness of our beaches,” said Chiew. Chiew (right) with a worker of a new commercial development at Bakam Beach. Adding on, Miri MP cited Coco Cabana as an example of successful tourist attraction here, back during its heyday several years ago before its closure for renovation. “I sincerely hope that Coco Cabana would reopen one day.” In this regard, Chiew had recently arranged a meeting with Samling Group of Companies executive director Datuk Adrian Ching, where the former highlighted the need of reopening Coco Cabana. Chiew argued that reopening the place would provide Miri with another strong tourism product, especially in conjunction with the ongoing Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. In a related development, the deputy minister recently visited a new commercial development at the Bakam Beach area, which was nearing completion. “This area features private outlets, cafés and restaurants as well as hostels. “I would like to assure all that I strive to help boost tourism promotional efforts by connecting businesses there with the relevant agencies and stakeholders. “I also commend our entrepreneurs for their initiatives in creating innovative, enjoyable and high-quality tourism products in Miri,” said Chiew.

Gerawat (third left) reacts after unveiling the book cover. From second left are Blair and Stanley. MIRI (March 9): The Sarawak government has allocated RM565 million to the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) since 2017, with RM70.9 million of the funds going to Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) churches across the state, said Datuk Gerawat Gala. The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) said the allocation for BEM had funded 639 church projects throughout Sarawak. “Our state government acknowledges and recognises the important role that churches play in nation building because the church teaches and champions values which promote healthy, peaceful, progressive, and harmonious communities,” he said when launching the book ‘Uncharted Waters: Memoirs of C Hudson Southwell’ here on Sunday. Gerawat pointed out the aid from Unifor for BEM churches across Sarawak does not include direct grants. He said these include RM10 million each for BEM Belaga, BEM Sungai Asap, and the BEM Centre in Batu Kawa, Kuching. “We sincerely hope that our BEM churches will continue to work closely with the state government in building a strong, united, and progressive Sarawak,” he said. Blair presents a signed copy of the book to Gerawat at the event. On the book, Gerawat said Southwell, who was born in 1900 and died in 1996, was a devoted missionary whose lifelong work in Borneo helped shape the development of Christian missions, particularly among the Orang Ulu communities in Baram. He said Southwell passed away in his homeland of Australia at the age of 96, leaving behind a lasting legacy through his writings and the church he helped establish. “If Southwell were alive today, he would be amazed to see how the seeds he planted many years ago have grown and multiplied far beyond his imagination,” he said. Gerawat also quoted figures from BEM Sarawak president Rev Bina Agong, who said there are currently 713 registered BEM churches and over 110,000 members in Sarawak. “In Sabah, there are 716 BEM churches and 79 in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said. He thanked book publisher and editor Rod Blair for recognising the importance of documenting Southwell’s life and ministry. Among those present at the book launch were BEM Sarawak secretary-general Stanley Sigar and BEM Miri chairman Pastor Loter Sakai.

MIRI (March 10): The Miri Chawan Association has played a significant role in the development and progress of various sectors, including education, while actively promoting Chinese culture since its establishment more than seven decades ago. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said this long-standing commitment is reflected in the association’s consistent emphasis on education, particularly in nurturing the younger generation. He noted that the association, established in 1949 and among the earliest clan associations in Miri, launched a fundraising drive in 2015 to set up a RM1 million education fund. “The association successfully achieved the target within just one year. Today, the education fund not only assists underprivileged children of members, but has also been expanded to cover various areas, including incentives for excellence in sports and academics, as well as newborn incentives to encourage larger families among members. “This truly elevates the purpose and impact of the education fund to the highest level,” he said in his speech at the Miri Chawan Association’s Chinese New Year dinner held at a leading hotel here on Monday. His speech text was read by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting. Touching on the Chinese New Year celebration, Dr Sim said it is one of the most important traditional festivals for the Chinese community, symbolising not only a new beginning but also the values of reunion, gratitude and hope. “Tonight’s Lunar New Year fellowship dinner is not merely a joyous gathering, but also a meaningful occasion that brings together the bonds of kinship and hometown ties. “Everyone can come together amid busy lives to exchange greetings and renew friendships. This is precisely the important role and significance of the association,” he said. (From third left) Norizan and Lee show samples of the MyLesen application forms that will be distributed to schools. MIRI (March 12): At least 1,000 students in Miri District will benefit from the MyLesen programme this year, which offers subsidised motorcycle licences to promote safe and legal riding among youths. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the programme, introduced two years ago, has received a positive response and helped address the issue of students riding motorcycles to school without valid licences. He said this during a press conference after chairing a meeting with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), police, Miri District Office, and the Miri Education Office on Tuesday. Lee said many students had previously travelled to school on motorcycles without valid licences and often failed to comply with safety regulations such as wearing helmets. “Normally the full cost of obtaining a motorcycle licence is about RM750. Under this programme, students only need to pay RM250, which means they receive a subsidy of RM500,” he said. The Senadin assemblyman said applications for the programme opened on March 11, with 1,000 slots already approved. The application forms will be distributed to all secondary schools in the district through the Education Department. He added that school principals will identify eligible students aged 16 and above who use motorcycles to commute to school. Once the completed forms are collected, they will be submitted to JPJ Miri, which will act as the secretariat for the programme. Lee said the programme will be implemented in collaboration with Institut Memandu City Miri, the Sarawak Transport Ministry, and the Sarawak Road Safety Council. Participants will undergo training, attend classes and sit for the required tests before receiving their licences upon passing. “The programme will run for about three months, with the practical driving tests expected to take place in June,” he said, adding that a closing ceremony would likely be held at the end of the programme. “We want the recipients of the MyLesen licences to become good role models and responsible road users,” he said. Lee said if there are remaining slots, they may be opened to the public, potentially increasing the total number of participants to 2,000 slots in the Miri district. Also present at the press conference was Sarawak JPJ director Norizan Jili.

The Sarawak Zone Bazaar Ramadan Rahmah (BRR) walkabout session commenced at the Permyjaya Ramadan Bazaar here, which is part of the broader Payung Rahmah Madani Programme initiative. Now entering its fourth year since its introduction on March 27, 2023, the 2026 BRR has expanded to 116 Ramadan bazaar locations nationwide, involving approximately 3,000 traders – an increase from 80 locations in 2023 and 103 locations in 2024. In Sarawak, the 11 BRR locations implemented in collaboration with local authorities are Permyjaya Ramadan Bazaar in Miri; Stutong Ramadan Bazaar and Satok Ramadan Bazaar in Kuching; Taman Komuniti Ramadan Bazaar in Serian, Fiesta Ramadan Bazaar Sri Aman (in front of the Old Hospital), Sarikei Central Market Parking Lot Ramadan Bazaar, Farley Parking Lot Ramadan Bazaar in Sibu, Setia Raja Ramadan Bazaar in Mukah, Taman Koridor Sejarah dan Kebudayaan Ramadan Bazaar in Bintulu, Lawas Square Ramadan Bazaar, and Parking Lot 777 MARA Ramadan Bazaar in Limbang. The Sarawak-level launch was officiated by KPDN Business Development, Corporate and Direct Sales Division secretary Dato’ Rohaizi Bahari last Saturday. According to Rohaizi, the 11 BRR locations in Sarawak aim to widen access to affordable food throughout Ramadan, with the state-level launch in held in Miri. “At this location alone, there are about 80 traders, with approximately 15 of them offering Rahmah Meals priced at RM5 and below,” he told reporters. “Although there has been an increase in the prices of goods, there is still room for traders to provide Rahmah menu options at reasonable prices to assist the public,” he added. Rohaizi expressed appreciation to traders who have collaborated with the ministry to ensure the success of the initiative and encouraged the public to continue supporting local vendors. In addition to enhancing access to affordable food, the government has strengthened the implementation of the Ihsan Food Bank (i-FB), a rebranding and transformation of the MySaveFood initiative. The i-FB initiative is based on the 3S concept — Support the Community, Save the Environment, and Save Food — by rescuing surplus food for redistribution to those in need. Meanwhile, KPDN is conducting regular monitoring under ‘Ops Pantau 2026’ to ensure compliance with price-tagging regulations and ethical business practices throughout Ramadan. To date, Rohaizi said the ministry has not received any complaints regarding the Rahmah Ramadan Bazaars in the state. He encouraged consumers to make informed purchasing by checking prices and cleanliness before buying and urged them to lodge complaints through KPDN’s official channels if traders fail to display price tags or violate stipulated conditions. “I hope the public will refrain from immediately spreading such matters on social media and instead report them to the ministry first to enable appropriate action to be taken,” he said. Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin (centre) inspects one of the drains in Senadin during his inspection on flood situation in the area on Sunday morning. — The Borneo Post MIRI, Jan 11 — The Miri City Council (MCC), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and Public Works Department (JKR) have been directed to take immediate action to address flash flood issues in several parts of the city, particularly in the Senadin area. Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who is also the Senadin assemblyman, said that during an inspection of the flood-affected areas in Senadin on Sunday morning, he found water levels in several streams and outlets to be higher than usual, preventing floodwater from discharging effectively into nearby rivers. “As such, DID will be tasked to look into this immediately, including clearing, widening and dredging certain streams where necessary,” he told reporters when met at a function on Sunday. He added that the relevant agencies have been instructed to carry out the works as soon as possible. Lee also highlighted drainage issues along Jalan Ilmu and parts of Desa Senadin, where one side of the drain is elevated and overgrown with vegetation. “This has worsened the situation. MCC will carry out immediate clearing works, including unsealing and clearing drains and removing vegetation, especially in Desa Ilmu and Desa Senadin, which are the most severely affected areas,” he said. Explaining the recurring floods in Senadin, Lee said the detention pond in the area was already at a high water level, limiting its ability to discharge excess water during heavy rain. “This issue must be resolved, both at the detention pond and the outlet,” he said. On the flood situation, Lee said that as of Sunday morning, floodwaters had receded in most areas, except in Desa Senadin. He added that conditions along the main road had improved significantly, with only one short stretch still inundated. During the visit, Lee said he and his team met residents in Desa Indah, Desa Murni and Desa Senadin to gather feedback, while inspections were also carried out on drainage outlets in the affected locations. Responding to criticism over delays in executing the projects, Lee said the focus has always been on completing the projects and resolving the problem rather than making repeated announcements. He thus called on residents to be patient, noting that plans are already in place to mitigate flooding not only in Senadin but across Miri through three major drainage projects that are either ongoing or have been approved. Lee added that the proposals for these projects were first submitted in early 2023. “The public must understand that such projects require time due to government procedures. “There are processes involved, including consultant appointments, studies, design, costing, siting approvals, land surveys and, in some cases, land acquisition. These procedures cannot be bypassed,” he added. — The Borneo Post

Lee (standing, seventh left), Randy (fifth left), Tan (sixth left) and Ariffin (seventh left) in a photocall with staff of Pullman Miri Waterfront and children from Peryatim Miri. MIRI (Feb 4): Pullman Miri Waterfront has been commended as a caring and compassionate corporate citizen and a model for other companies to emulate in carrying out corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives for the surrounding community, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. The Sarawak Transport Minister said the hotel has consistently upheld its social obligations by organising community-based programmes every year, particularly during festive seasons such as Christmas and Chinese New Year. “When celebrating a festival, we should not forget those who are less fortunate. By giving them the opportunity to join in and celebrate together, it makes a meaningful difference,” he said when officiating the Gong Xi Raya dinner at Pullman Miri Waterfront hotel here on Monday night. He added that such initiatives help ensure the less fortunate feel included as part of society and are able to experience the joy and atmosphere of festive celebrations, which in turn bring positive impact to the community. A total of 70 orphans from the Sarawak Orphans Welfare Board (Peryatim) Miri were invited to the dinner and to experience the Chinese New Year festive atmosphere during the programme. According to Lee, the hotel’s CSR efforts reflect Sarawak’s unique identity, which is widely recognised for its harmony, unity, mutual respect and close ties among communities of different religions and cultural backgrounds. He said that in Sarawak, festivals are celebrated collectively by the entire community. “Chinese New Year is not only for the Chinese community. In Sarawak, almost everyone celebrates it together. We hold open houses and people from various cultural backgrounds come to visit and exchange festive greetings. “The same spirit applies to other festivals. During Hari Raya, we extend Selamat Hari Raya to our Muslim friends, and when Gawai arrives, we wish our Dayak friends Selamat Hari Gawai. This is what makes Sarawak special — we celebrate together regardless of our differences,” he said. Touching on development matters, Lee said the Sarawak government continues to strengthen the business and tourism sectors, particularly positioning Miri as a resort city. He noted that AirBorneo has commenced operations, with its flights running smoothly, and plans are underway to expand its regional routes in the second half of the year, subject to regulatory approvals. Lee said Miri also needs more five-star hotels to attract international events. “At present, Miri has only about two five-star hotels with around 500 rooms. To host large-scale international conferences and events, we require at least 2,000 to 3,000 five-star hotel rooms, supported by four-star hotels,” he said. With the development of a convention centre and other projects in Miri, Lee said the demand for quality hotel accommodation has become increasingly critical. He added that with these developments in place, Miri has strong potential to emerge as a major destination for international events and conferences in the region. Also present at the dinner were Interhill Hospitality chief operating officer Eric Tan, Pullman Miri Waterfront general manager Randy Nickcolas Constantine and Miri City deputy mayor Cr Ariffin Mohamad.

Chiew Choon Man MIRI (Feb 2): Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister and Miri MP Chiew Choon Man is supporting two major Chinese New Year (CNY) carnival events in the city this February, aimed at bringing joy back to local shoppers and hawkers. The events mark a revival after last year’s cancellation of the traditional annual bazaar, which had been organised for decades by Miri City Council (MCC) and the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Chiew said community-focused festive programmes play a crucial role in strengthening cultural identity, boosting tourism, supporting the local economy, and creating sustainable income opportunities for traders, SMEs, and players in the creative industry. “These initiatives directly align with the national tourism recovery strategy and Sarawak’s tourism growth agenda,” he said in a statement on Monday. The first event, ‘Back to the 80’s – Old Street Chinese New Year Market’, will be held from February 13 to 16, from 4pm to 11pm at Krokop 5 Market. The nostalgia-themed market aims to recreate the atmosphere of traditional 1980s Chinese New Year street markets, featuring handwritten spring couplets, traditional festive snacks, heritage food stalls, and interactive cultural activities. Chiew said such initiatives help preserve intangible cultural heritage, encourage intergenerational cultural transmission, and provide authentic tourism experiences for both locals and visitors. The second event, ‘the 2026 Year of the Horse Carnival’, will take place from February 5 to 14, from 5pm to 11pm at the Boulevard Shopping Mall open car park. Featuring 40 to 50 booths, the carnival will offer CNY delicacies, festive merchandise, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The venue will be adorned with lanterns, cultural installations and themed lighting to create an immersive festive atmosphere. Nightly Chinese cultural performances are scheduled throughout the 10-day event to encourage repeat visits and sustain economic activity for nearby businesses. Chiew has provided financial support for the performances to enhance the vibrancy of the festivals and enrich visitors’ cultural experience. He emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in developing diversified tourism products, strengthening destination branding, and boosting Malaysia’s competitiveness in cultural tourism. He also thanked the organisers for promoting cultural heritage, fostering community participation, and creating festive tourism platforms that benefit local businesses and the wider community. Chiew pledged that his office would continue collaborating with organisers, stakeholders and government agencies to ensure that Miri remains an attractive, dynamic and culturally rich tourism destination.

Yii (seated 3rd right) posing for a group photo with representatives of Thinker Cultural Tourism Operator Water Theme Parks, China after the courtesy visit. MIRI: Miri may be a step closer to hosting the first large-scale regional water theme park in northern Borneo following a high-level courtesy call between a China-based cultural tourism operator and the city’s leadership, facilitated by Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd. The meeting, held at the Mayor’s Office on Monday (Feb 2), brought together representatives of Thinker Cultural Tourism Operator Water Theme Parks from China and the TAK Group of Companies with Miri City Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang. The engagement focused on assessing Miri’s readiness for a major leisure and tourism investment, with Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) identified as a potential site. Yii said the discussions were constructive and informative, noting that the delegation represented a sizeable operator with extensive experience in China. “They are a big group with major operations in China. We provided them with a briefing on Miri, and they indicated that Miri is an interesting location with strong potential for a water theme park development,” he told reporters after the meeting. Yii said the proposed project, if realised, would be the only water theme park of its kind in the region, positioning it as a regional draw rather than a purely local attraction. “This will be a regional attraction. Within a two-hour driving radius, Miri already has a catchment of about one million people. With improved connectivity, it is conceivable that visitors could come from as far as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and even across Borneo,” he said. He added that the operator’s established international marketing and tourism networks, particularly in China, could significantly boost visitor arrivals and support the city’s broader economic development objectives. The mayor said the delegation would now proceed with further site investigations and detailed evaluations before making any investment decision. “We are hopeful they will find Miri suitable for the investment. They will conduct their own feasibility studies and assessments,” he said. Yii also revealed that the preliminary concept discussed included an integrated development component, with plans for additional hotel capacity of up to 500 rooms to support the water theme park. He noted that such facilities could be expanded further, subject to demand and future growth. Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd, which facilitated the engagement, described the meeting as an important first step in positioning Miri on the radar of reputable international investors in the cultural tourism and leisure sector. The company reiterated its role as a bridge between global investors and local stakeholders, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, urban planning priorities and long-term sustainability goals. The Chinese delegation comprised senior executives from Thinker Cultural Tourism Operator Water Theme Parks, including sales director Chang Yana and general managers Chen Weimin and Jiang Hepiang; and TAK Group vice-president and head of risk management Darren Tan and alongside project architect Aryton Kong. Yii said the city council remained committed to supporting investments that deliver long-term economic and social value for Miri and its surrounding areas. “If this project materialises, it will not only enhance Miri’s tourism offering but also stimulate growth in the surrounding areas. That is the outcome we are working towards,” he added.

Saloma (middle) and other member of JKKK Kampung Piasau Utara proudly showing their dipping sauce which they produce in their newly upgraded kitchen. MIRI (Feb 5): What began as a small community effort in Kampung Piasau Utara has grown into a source of warmth, confidence and renewed hope, especially for the women who are now playing a more active role in supporting their families and the wider community. Using the kitchen at the village’s multipurpose hall, a group of the village’s women has produced their own dipping sauce, ‘Sos Pencicah Pelbagai Rasa KRT Piasau Utara’, earlier this month. Saloma Amat, a member of the village’s development and security committee (JKKK), said the availability of proper kitchen facilities has made a real difference. “With equipment such as a grinder, refrigerator, other kitchen equipment and a newly upgraded kitchen, it has become much easier and more comfortable for us to try new ideas, “By making good use of our free time, we can earn extra income for our families while strengthening women’s roles and family bonds in this village,” she said in an interview. Saloma explained that the kitchen equipment, renovations and improvements to the multipurpose hall — including fans, chairs and eight units of industrial air coolers — were made possible through funding from the Ministry of Digital after Kampung Piasau Utara was selected as a Kampung Angkat Madani (KAM). Mohd Mansor (third left) and members of the village JKKK committee giving a thumbs-up to one of the industrial air coolers purchased using funding from the Ministry of Digital. Encouraged by the positive response to their first product, the women are now planning to expand into other products such as tomato sauce and Thai chilli sauce, with hopes of involving more women in the village and creating steady income for them. “Currently, about eight women are involved, but we hope more women will join us so we can support one another and contribute together to our household finances,” Saloma said. The funding from the minister under the KAM initiative has also helped improve daily life in the village, particularly in terms of safety and community use of shared spaces. KAM is an initiative involving Federal agencies, with the support of the Minister of Finance and Unit Pantau MADANI, to empower local communities through targeted development and support. JKKK Kampung Piasau Utara deputy chairman Mohd Mansor Mohd Hatim said residents now feel more secure and comfortable moving around their neighbourhood. He noted that theft cases have declined after better street lighting was installed at strategic locations throughout Kampung Piasau Utara. “In the past, poorly lit roads made residents feel uneasy and contributed to theft cases,” he said, adding that some incidents involved individuals struggling with drug abuse. With the installation of 35 solar light-emitting diode (LED) street lights, Mohd Mansor said residents now feel safer leaving their homes, and the village environment has become livelier, especially in the evenings. “Our futsal court is much more active now, with youths making full use of the facility until late at night because the area is well lit,” he said. Mohd Mansor said that the village’s Darul Hijrah Mosque also recently received a new closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, replacing an earlier system that was no longer functioning. Newly installed LED street lights in front of the mosque. The mosque, he said, has also received its first hearse, easing difficulties previously faced by the Muslim community. “Previously, we had to borrow a hearse from Darul Ehsan Mosque in Kampung Piasau Jaya,” Mohd Mansor said, adding that the mosque committee has agreed to make it available to any resident in need regardless of background. This, he said, reflects the close-knit nature of the village community, since they relocated to the area in the 1980s. The new hearse for Darul Hijrah Mosque Kampung Piasau Utara. The majority of residents are Melanau families resettled by the state government from Kampung Dagang near Sungai Miri, now part of the Miri Waterfront area. The village is also home to residents from other communities, including the Iban, Orang Ulu and a small number of Chinese. Support has also reached the Christian community in Kampung Piasau Utara. The Holy Rosary Chapel, located about 150 metres from the Darul Hijrah Mosque, has undergone repairs to fix roof leaks. “The damaged sections have now been replaced, and we have also received a new public address system and better-quality lighting,” the church chairman Zephrynius Har Kunai said.

MIRI (Feb 5): Residents here have raised concerns over clogged drains at the Boulevard Commercial Centre and Pelita Commercial Centre, prompting an immediate site inspection by Miri parliamentary service centre special officer Chaw Zhe Jian. Chaw said he found drains at both locations blocked and choked with rubbish, causing not just foul odours but also disrupting water flow, affecting the daily lives of residents and traders in the surrounding areas. “Following complaints received yesterday, I went to the locations at around 7am to inspect the situation personally. “What I observed was serious, with drains filled with rubbish, stagnant water, and unpleasant smells affecting the environment,” he said. Chaw noted the situation not only caused inconvenience but also posed potential hygiene and health risks if left unaddressed. He added that the matter had been immediately brought to the attention of the relevant authorities and departments, with urgent cleaning and restoration works emphasised. “I will continue to monitor progress to ensure that this issue is addressed thoroughly, so that the people of Miri can once again enjoy a clean and safe environment,” he said. He also urged members of the public to help maintain cleanliness by disposing of rubbish properly and refraining from littering. “With the cooperation of all parties, we can make Miri a cleaner, more comfortable and pleasant city to live in.” Chaw stressed that public service requires attention to issues affecting residents’ daily lives, listening to public feedback seriously, and taking concrete action to resolve problems on the ground.
