Yii (centre) speaks at a press conference, as other officials look on. MIRI (March 31): Miri City Council (MCC) will set up a multi-departmental task force to ensure perimeter drains are properly maintained as part of efforts to address flash flood concerns and improve urban sanitation. Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the initiative comes in response to recurring flash floods since last year, largely attributed to heavy rainfall as well as clogged and poorly maintained drainage systems. “Flooding can be caused by many factors, including heavy rainfall and the condition of drains and blockages. “What we can do on the council’s part is to ensure that dirty drains are not one of the causes,” he told a press conference after chairing the council’s March full meeting on Monday. He noted that MCC has already initiated an ongoing drain-cleaning campaign across the city to mitigate such risks, while the task force will focus specifically on maintaining the cleanliness of perimeter drains, particularly in commercial areas. Yii said the council has received complaints from the public regarding clogged drains and foul odours, often linked to improper waste disposal practices. He added that the task force will involve several departments, including engineering, public health and other relevant units, to ensure stricter compliance among food outlets and businesses, particularly in the installation and maintenance of grease traps. “This will be a coordinated effort involving multiple departments. “In the coming months, we will intensify enforcement and ensure that all premises comply with council regulations,” Yii added. He also stressed that maintaining a clean and flood-resilient city is a shared responsibility, urging businesses and the public to play their part. “These issues cannot be addressed by the council alone. “All stakeholders must work together. At the same time, we will continue to enhance public awareness so that collectively we can maintain a clean and sustainable city,” Yii added.

File photo shows the Hollywood-style ‘Miri’ sign atop Canada Hill. MIRI (March 31): Miri City Council (MCC) has achieved another milestone with its recognition under the Asean Tourism Standards (ATS) 2026-2028, securing the Asean Clean Tourist City Award at the national level for Sarawak. Miri City Secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek said the award reflects MCC’s continued commitment to maintaining Miri as a clean, green and sustainable tourism destination. He noted that the recognition was based on key criteria including urban cleanliness, effective waste management, environmental sustainability, and well-maintained public amenities. “This is the second consecutive time Miri has received this recognition, covering the 2026-2028 cycle, after also being acknowledged for the 2024-2026 period,” Abdul Rahman said. He added that the award is granted following an evaluation process involving the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (Motac) and related agencies, covering various categories including local authorities, hotels and other tourism-related entities. According to Abdul Rahman, Miri’s overall cleanliness has been consistently maintained, as reflected in positive feedback from tourists, strengthening the city’s reputation as a preferred destination in northern Sarawak. Meanwhile, Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the recognition would serve as motivation rather than lead to complacency. “With this award, we will not slow down. “In fact, we will intensify our efforts by strengthening collaboration among departments, stakeholders and the public to ensure Miri remains clean and well-managed,” Yii said. He added that the achievement reflects strong collaboration between MCC, government agencies, tourism stakeholders, local businesses, and the community. “It further strengthens Miri’s position as a key tourism gateway in northern Sarawak and supports the state’s vision for sustainable tourism development under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030),” he said.

MIRI (March 31): A fundraising campaign for two-hearing impaired children in need of cochlear implant surgery is struggling to reach its RM200,000 target. Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the donation drive for five-year-old Flora Lee Kai Shuan and three-year-old Andy Harrison has only raised RM47,550 as of Monday. “The fundraising target has yet to be achieved, and we hope the public will continue to extend their support so that these children can have a chance for the future,” said the Miri Cochlear Implant Society chairman. “Although we have made some progress, there is still a considerate gap. We hope more people will come forward to help these children step out of a silent world.” He explained that cochlear implant surgery is crucial for hearing-impaired children. Early intervention offers a strong chance for them to gain hearing and integrate into normal learning and daily life, therefore delays in the surgery may have long-term impacts on their development. He pointed out that no surgeries have been scheduled as arrangements can only be made once sufficient funds are secured. Ting said the procedures may be carried out locally or at other suitable medical institutions. He noted that both children come from families unable to afford the high medical costs, making public assistance even more vital. “Every contribution brings hope and a chance for these children to hear,” he said. Those wishing to contribute to the surgeries may channel their donations to Alliance Bank account: 110270010015028 (Sehati Service & Information Centre).

Dr Voon speaks during the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign 2026 and the Colorectal Cancer Medication Services programme at Miri Hospital on Tuesday. MIRI (March 31): Data from Sarawak shows that 30 per cent of colorectal cancer cases occur among individuals below the age of 40, highlighting a worrying trend of early-onset cases in the state. Colorectal surgeon at Miri Hospital Dr Kenneth Voon Kher Ti said that although the Ministry of Health has stated that the majority of male and female colorectal cancer patients are diagnosed at the age of 50 and above, Sarawak’s data presents a different picture. “Screening is generally recommended for those aged between 50 and 75. However, we must bear in mind that Sarawak data shows that 30 per cent of colorectal cancer cases occur in those under 40,” he said. Dr Voon was speaking at the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign 2026 and the Colorectal Cancer Medication Services programme held at Miri Hospital on Tuesday. He also revealed that his youngest patient was just 16 years old and that he was scheduled to operate on her soon. “So, do not think that age is a form of protection,” he stressed. He added that 70 per cent of colorectal cancer cases are detected at a late stage, namely stages three and four, and emphasised the importance of early detection, noting that treatment can begin immediately if cancer is identified early. “If it is detected very early, we can remove it straight away during a colonoscopy, and the patient is treated. But if it is advanced, surgery is required, and patients may need to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy,” he said. According to him, treatment and recovery become far more complicated when cancer is detected at an advanced stage. Dr Voon also shared that many patients take time to fully come to terms with their diagnosis. “It causes a lot of stress, affecting work and family life. I always tell my patients that the cancer treatment process is like going into a battle or a war. We are fighting against millions and millions of cancer cells,” he said. Meanwhile, Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, in a speech read by Cr Huang Hong Siong, said that early detection saves lives. He noted that, as highlighted by Dr Voon, hospitals continue to record a significant number of new colorectal cancer cases each year. “This reminds us that awareness and screening must be continuous efforts—not just for today, but throughout the years,” he said. He also commended the doctors and specialists at Miri Hospital for their commitment to strengthening healthcare services, including the expansion of endoscopy units and the introduction of colorectal cancer medication services. “This initiative will greatly support patients in their journey, because truly, no one fights cancer alone. Let us all take responsibility to be aware, to encourage screening, and to support one another,” he added. Also present was Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong.

Brunei’s Department of Energy said the move is aimed at safeguarding the nation’s petroleum supply amid geopolitical developments in the Middle East since late February 2026. – Bernama photo MIRI (March 31): Malaysian vehicle owners are advised to fill before entering Brunei, as its government will require all foreign vehicles to have at least three-quarters of a tank of fuel starting April 1. Brunei’s Department of Energy (DOE) said the move is aimed at safeguarding the nation’s petroleum supply amid geopolitical developments in the Middle East since late February 2026. “All foreign-registered vehicles entering Brunei Darussalam will be required to maintain a minimum fuel level of three-quarter tank upon entry. “Foreign vehicles that do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to enter Brunei Darussalam,” the statement said. However, official government vehicles are exempted from this requirement. Foreign vehicles in Brunei will only be allowed to purchase Shell V-Power Gasoline or Shell V-Power Diesel at participating petrol stations at prevailing market rates. The rule does not apply to Brunei-registered vehicles returning from Malaysia on their first entry, but it will be enforced for second and subsequent entries within a 24-hour period. The DOE has also instructed all fuel station operators to follow verification procedures strictly to prevent abuse. “Actions will be taken for any attempts to use false or modified registration plates. Monitoring and enforcement will be actively carried out by the relevant authorities,” it said. The department added that these measures are mandatory and form part of Brunei’s efforts to ensure subsidised fuel is used responsibly while protecting national energy security.

Lee (fourth left) and other officials stop by an aviation exhibition booth during the programme. MIRI (March 31): Sarawak’s aspiration to develop a low-altitude economy is set to transform the state’s economic landscape and rural connectivity by leveraging a growing drone ecosystem for services such as medicine delivery, crop monitoring and emergency response. State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative could address longstanding challenges faced by communities in the state’s vast interior, where access has traditionally depended on small aircraft navigating unpredictable weather to reach remote short take-off and landing airports (STOLports). Speaking at the Aviation Safety Seminar 2026 here, he outlined a bold vision for advancing the low-altitude economy — a new economic layer in airspace below commercial flight levels — that could fundamentally reshape service delivery to remote areas. “These include medical supply delivery to rural clinics, agricultural crop monitoring and precision farming, infrastructure inspection across remote terrain, environmental and forestry surveillance, and emergency response in disaster-prone regions,” he said. The seminar, co-organised by the Sarawak Transport Ministry’s Aviation Division, Curtin University Malaysia, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), is the third in a series following previous editions in Kuching (2024) and Sibu (2025). It featured presentations and panel discussions involving industry players, academics and regulators, alongside exhibitions by stakeholders showcasing the latest aviation and drone technologies. Lee said global developments indicate that the low-altitude airspace is rapidly emerging as a new economic frontier. He noted that China has advanced its low-altitude economy through strong policy support, while Singapore is piloting unmanned traffic management systems and cross-border drone delivery trials. The European Union, he added, has introduced harmonised frameworks to integrate drones safely into civil airspace. “These developments signal a global transformation in aviation. The airspace below traditional commercial flight levels is rapidly becoming an economic domain.” The minister also outlined a framework anchored on three pillars: safety; a smart, digitally-enabled ecosystem; and sustainability. He said the ecosystem would be driven by technologies such as traffic management systems, geofencing, real-time monitoring and cybersecurity. On sustainability, Lee stressed the importance of developing a skilled workforce to support the sector. “Engineers, drone pilots, airspace planners, data analysts, cybersecurity specialists, and safety auditors will form the backbone of the Low Altitude Economy,” he said. Lee welcomed the involvement of institutions such as Curtin University Malaysia, Swinburne University, i-CATS University College, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) in cultivating future aviation talent through research collaboration, curriculum development, and industry-linked training. Currently, 120 trainees are enrolled in aircraft maintenance programmes at Centexs as Sarawak ramps up its aviation ambitions, including the launch of AirBorneo and its goal of becoming a second national airline hub. Lee added that the seminar series has evolved from raising awareness to driving structured development. In line with this, the ministry plans to explore pilot corridors in suitable rural and semi-urban areas, strengthen university and research partnerships, and encourage responsible industry participation as part of the state’s low-altitude economy strategy.

Dennis (third left) speaks to SPM students during a revision session. MIRI (April 1): SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau Long San (SMKTLDJ) in Ulu Baram have achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in this year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau described the achievement as a ‘remarkable feat’ for one of the three secondary schools in his constituency. “Despite being located deep in the interior, where access to education remains a daily challenge, these students have demonstrated determination and resilience on par with their urban counterparts. “Today’s results are a testament to their hard work,” he told The Borneo Post on Tuesday. Dennis, who had contacted the school for updates on the SPM results, noted that two other schools in the constituency—SMK Long Bedian and SMK Long Lama—also recorded commendable performances, though they fell short of a perfect pass rate. He said that SMK Long Bedian achieved a 96.67 per cent pass rate, while SMK Long Lama recorded 99.18 per cent. On a related note, Dennis acknowledged that transportation continues to be a major challenge for rural students. “Yet this does not dampen their enthusiasm for learning, even when they have to travel long distances from their villages,” he added. Reflecting on a previous visit to SMKTLDJ, Dennis recalled an incident where a power outage occurred while students were preparing for their SPM examinations. He said the students continued studying using torchlights and whatever resources available. “It was heartening to help get the generator running almost immediately,” Dennis added. Dennis also commended teachers serving in remote areas for their dedication, recognising the sacrifices of time, energy, and comfort to ensure students in interior communities receive quality education.

Ting receives a warm welcome from the Kelabit community during the event. BARIO (April 1): The highland community here gathered in solemn reverence last Saturday to mark the 81st anniversary of the Z Force parachute landing of 1945, an event that reshaped Sarawak’s history and opened the remote Kelabit Highlands to the outside world. Organised by Rurum Kelabit Sarawak in collaboration with the Miri City Council and government agencies, the annual commemoration honours members of the Z Special Unit and the alliance forged with indigenous communities during the final days of the World War II (WWII). The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chew Yew, representing the Sarawak government. The historic parachute landing under Operation Semut I marked the beginning of a close partnership between Allied forces and the Kelabit people, who used their knowledge of the terrain to support guerrilla operations against Japanese occupying forces in Borneo. Rurum Kelabit Sarawak president Dato Isaac Lugun said the landing was a turning point for the highlands, citing the late Tom Harrisson’s account in ‘World Within’, which described Bario as a “closed world” before the operation. “The Z Force landing opened up the Kelabit Highlands to the world outside it,” he said. Ting (seated, fifth left) and other guests being joined by local village and community leaders for a group photo. Isaac likened the descending parachutes to “engkabang fruit drifting in the wind,” saying the moment marked the beginning of a profound connection between the remote highlands and the outside world. He added that the two key legacies of the period were education and faith, which had transformed the community over the decades. “Education became the foundation for the Kelabit community to flourish, and the Christian faith provided a moral compass,” he said. This year’s programme included memorial ceremonies, cultural performances, exhibitions and reflections from community leaders and guests, with organisers emphasising the importance of passing the history to younger generations. From a remote interior settlement, Bario has since gained international recognition, with its wartime story forming part of Malaysia’s national heritage.

Dr Sim said the letter, issued after Cabinet’s decision on December 2025, affirmed that the federal government has no objection to the establishment of the campus, while the Ministry of Higher Education will continue to provide guidance to facilitate the necessary submissions and regulatory processes. “We are now moving into the implementation phase. With support from Sarawak and the federal government, what remains is to complete the formalities with the Chinese authorities so that we can realise the establishment of the Fudan University branch campus in Miri,” he told a press conference at a local hotel here on Saturday after visiting a site for the university. He noted that discussions have already been held with Fudan representatives and the next critical step is to engage directly with China’s Ministry of Education to secure their approval. Highlighting the urgency of the project, Dr Sim stressed that the proposed campus will prioritise the establishment of a medical school, in view of Sarawak’s acute shortage of doctors, currently estimated at about 2,000. He pointed out that while there are some 5,000 medical posts available nationwide, only 538 placements have been filled, according to the Ministry of Health, leaving a shortage of over 4,000 doctors. “The medical faculty is critical for us. Fudan’s medical school is not an ordinary one. It includes postgraduate level, and this is the kind of quality we hope to bring to Sarawak,” he said. He added that once the university is established, Miri is expected to undergo significant transformation, not only as an emerging education hub, but also in terms of increased international connectivity, including the potential for more direct flights.

Gerawat (11th right) cuts the ribbon to mark the soft launch of the new parking bays at the Forum building on Tuesday. MIRI (March 18): The Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (Forum) building at Jalan Padang here now has additional parking bays following the completion of a project on Oct 3 last year. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the project, which included other associated works costing RM966,896.60, has added 155 new parking bays to the existing 255 bays to cater to increasing demand among users of the building. He said the new parking bays would enhance convenience for the public, particularly visitors and tenants, while helping to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in the surrounding area. “The construction of this facility is an important step towards enhancing comfort and convenience for the public, especially visitors and tenants of the building. With more organised and adequate parking spaces, it will also help reduce congestion,” he said at a meeting with the Forum’s committee before the soft launch of the new parking area at the building on Tuesday. Gerawat, who is also Mulu assemblyman, said the project reflects the government’s continued commitment to upgrading public infrastructure to be more systematic, safe and user-friendly, in line with the needs of a rapidly developing urban area. He added that the improved facilities are expected to generate positive spillover effects on local economic activities, while enhancing the image of the Forum building as a more conducive and efficient centre. “The additional parking bays and other upgrading works — including the development of a gallery, improvements to acoustic quality in the main hall and upgrades to the building’s kitchen — were funded under an additional RM5 million allocation from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said. Also present were Forum president Datuk Nyurak Keti and the Premier’s political secretary Dominic Nyurang Ajang.

(From third left) Norizan and Lee show samples of the MyLesen application forms that will be distributed to schools. MIRI (March 12): At least 1,000 students in Miri District will benefit from the MyLesen programme this year, which offers subsidised motorcycle licences to promote safe and legal riding among youths. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the programme, introduced two years ago, has received a positive response and helped address the issue of students riding motorcycles to school without valid licences. He said this during a press conference after chairing a meeting with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), police, Miri District Office, and the Miri Education Office on Tuesday. Lee said many students had previously travelled to school on motorcycles without valid licences and often failed to comply with safety regulations such as wearing helmets. “Normally the full cost of obtaining a motorcycle licence is about RM750. Under this programme, students only need to pay RM250, which means they receive a subsidy of RM500,” he said. The Senadin assemblyman said applications for the programme opened on March 11, with 1,000 slots already approved. The application forms will be distributed to all secondary schools in the district through the Education Department. He added that school principals will identify eligible students aged 16 and above who use motorcycles to commute to school. Once the completed forms are collected, they will be submitted to JPJ Miri, which will act as the secretariat for the programme. Lee said the programme will be implemented in collaboration with Institut Memandu City Miri, the Sarawak Transport Ministry, and the Sarawak Road Safety Council. Participants will undergo training, attend classes and sit for the required tests before receiving their licences upon passing. “The programme will run for about three months, with the practical driving tests expected to take place in June,” he said, adding that a closing ceremony would likely be held at the end of the programme. “We want the recipients of the MyLesen licences to become good role models and responsible road users,” he said. Lee said if there are remaining slots, they may be opened to the public, potentially increasing the total number of participants to 2,000 slots in the Miri district. Also present at the press conference was Sarawak JPJ director Norizan Jili.

Photo shows the awake craniotomy being performed on the patient MIRI (March 16): It was a major milestone for Miri Hospital as its team had performed its first-ever awake craniotomy using electrocorticography (ECoG) and functional mapping. Undertaken on March 11, the procedure was led by consultant neurosurgeons Dr Manvinder Singh Mangat and Dr Lim Swee San. The patient was a man diagnosed with seizures. “The MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) revealed a low-grade glioma located in the let superior temporal region – the brain’s critical speech centre. “To remove the tumour safely without affecting the patient’s ability to speak, the team performed an awake craniotomy using EcoG and functional mapping. “Because the patient was awake throughout, the surgical team could monitor speech in real-time, ensuring maximum tumour removal while preserving vital functions. “We are grateful to share that the procedure was successful, and the patient was discharged home healthy, just two days later – with no speech deficits,” said Miri Hospital in a Facebook post on Monday. It pointed out that previously, patients from northern and central Sarawak requiring such complex brain surgery would have to travel to Kuching, or event to Kuala Lumpur – a journey that meant significant time, cost and separation from family support. The neurosurgery team of Miri Hospital, led by Dr Manvinder and Dr Lim. — Photos from Facebook / Miri Hospital-Official “This milestone meant that world-class care is now more accessible locally; patients nnd families can stay closer to home during challenging times; and Miri Hospital can continue its journey towards providing quality, advanced neurosurgery services for the region,” it added. In the post, the hospital expressed appreciation to the Miri Neurosurgical Services, established by Dr Manvinder in 2018 under the vision of then-Head of Neurosurgical Services Sarawak, Dr Albert Wong. “Since then, the team has performed over 500 cases yearly – covering tumours, spine and vascular issues – quietly serving thousands who once had to be transferred to Kuching.” “This is not just a surgical milestone – it is a reminder that when we work together, complex care can be delivered closer to home,” said Miri Hospital. It is informed that the Neurosurgical Department of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in Kuching has performed more than 15 awake craniotomies since 2017, and shared its clinical experience through its publication on this area of surgery from 2017 to 2022. “The pioneering work at the SGH has laid the groundwork for procedures like this,” said Miri Hospital.

Lee (seated, sixth left) joins guests and community leaders for a group photo. MIRI (March 7): The appointment of community leaders reflects the trust placed in them by the government and the people, and carries a responsibility that must carried out diligently, said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin. The Senadin assemblyman described grassroots leaders as an important bridge between the government and the people, enabling authorities to better understand the needs and concerns of local communities. Speaking at a Chinese New Year luncheon by the Miri Chinese Community Leaders Association here, he expressed appreciation for the long-standing contributions of community leaders who have worked tirelessly in their respective neighbourhoods. “Community leaders have played significant roles in coordinating community affairs, assisting residents in resolving problems and organising activities that help foster unity and harmony within the community,” he said. Lee added that the feedback and communication provided by community leaders allow the public to better understand government policies and directions, while also enabling the government to hear and respond to the voices of the grassroots. He noted that many issues at the grassroots level are first brought to the attention of community leaders, including clogged drains, potholes, damaged streetlights and poorly maintained public facilities. “While these issues may appear minor, they directly affect the daily lives and safety of the people,” he said. As such, he encouraged community leaders to take the initiative to assist residents and promptly relay issues to the relevant authorities so that solutions can be implemented more efficiently. He also emphasised the importance of communication and cooperation among grassroots leaders to ensure responsibilities are carried out effectively. Present at the event were Pujut assemblyman mayor Adam Yii, Miri Resident Galong Luang; and other guests.

Ting (sixth left) and SMK Luak principal Nancy Ngaran (fifth left) with teachers and contractors as well as councillors in a photocall. MIRI (March 13): A substantial portion of his constituency development funds has been channelled towards education through the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), said Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew. He said that since being elected as Piasau assemblyman in 2016 until 2025, more than RM13.3 million has been allocated to schools through various RTP projects, reflecting his focus on improving school infrastructure and creating better learning environments. “Schools are very important because they represent our future generation. That is why we pay special attention to school children and the development of school facilities,” he said during a visit to SMK Luak and SK Kampung Luak. According to Ting, the effort is aimed at ensuring students have a conducive learning environment while also supporting teachers and school administrations in delivering quality education. He also noted that the Sarawak government has consistently placed education among its key priorities, citing initiatives such as the provision of free tertiary education as part of the state’s commitment. “At the end of the day, education is the foundation for the future. By strengthening our schools today, we are preparing the next generation to lead Sarawak forward,” he added. At SMK Luak, Ting inspected an ongoing project involving the construction of drains near the school’s football court. The RM100,000 project, which commenced on Dec 22, 2025, is expected to be completed within six months, around mid-June this year. Once completed, the drain will help divert rainwater away from the school compound and reduce the risk of flooding. Another RTP project at SMK Luak is the installation of a roof over a netball court at a cost of RM250,000. The project is expected to commence by the end of March and be completed within six months. Ting later visited two RTP 2025 projects at SK Kampung Luak — a futsal court and a roofed open multipurpose hall. The futsal court was built at a cost of RM120,000, while the multipurpose hall was upgraded with a roof at a cost of RM80,000. Meanwhile, Ting also presented Minor Rural Projects (MRP) cheques to both schools.

Gerawat makes a point during the meeting in Kuching. MIRI (March 13): Passenger traffic at Mulu Airport has more than doubled its designed annual capacity, prompting discussions on a runway expansion to sustain growing tourism at Gunung Mulu National Park. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the airport terminal was originally built to handle around 50,000 passengers a year, but recorded over 71,000 arrivals in 2025 alone. “The existing runway stretches approximately 1,507 metres, and upgrading it has become necessary to accommodate larger aircraft and higher traffic volumes as the park’s popularity grows,” the Mulu assemblyman said in a Facebook post. Gerawat said he had earlier chaired a meeting in Kuching with representatives from the Transport Ministry and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad to advance the proposal. He also expressed appreciation for the agencies’ commitment to carrying out rehabilitation and upgrading works to ensure passenger safety and comfort. However, he noted that the main challenge lies in the logistical aspect of bringing heavy machinery and construction materials into the remote Mulu area, which is located far inland. “Therefore, this meeting focused on discussing the best methods to ensure the transportation process and project implementation can be carried out more effectively,” he said. Representatives from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and the state Transport Ministry were also present at the discussions, which centred on ensuring the project could be implemented effectively to support the area’s continued tourism growth. A Unesco World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park is among Sarawak’s most celebrated eco-tourism destinations, known for its towering limestone karst formations, vast cave systems and exceptional biodiversity.

MIRI (March 16): Sarawak is positioning itself to tap into the emerging low-altitude economy, with plans to explore opportunities in drone logistics, smart city applications and technology-driven industries. State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said his ministry is actively laying the ground work to develop the sector, which has been globally recognised as a major future economic frontier. “With rapid technological development, the low-altitude economy is gradually moving from concept to industrial application and is widely regarded as a new engine of economic growth,” Lee said. His speech was delivered by his representative Jeffrey Phang during the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) annual general meeting here yesterday. Lee explained that the sector covers a wide range of applications, including drone-based logistics, environmental monitoring, agricultural technology and smart urban management. To further explore the industry’s potential, he said an aviation safety seminar titled ‘Advancing the Low Altitude Economy: Safe, Smart and Sustainable Growth’ will be held in Miri later this month. The seminar will be organised in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Curtin University Malaysia, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss regulatory frameworks, safety standards and industry development. “The initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to position Sarawak at the forefront of new economic sectors driven by technology and innovation,” he said. Lee also encouraged businesses in Miri to explore opportunities within the low-altitude economy, noting that early participation would place local enterprises in a strong position as the industry expands. Apart from the initiative, the Senadin assemblyman also highlighted improvements in regional connectivity through Sarawak’s own airline Air Borneo, as well as the planned expansion of Miri Airport to support future economic and tourism growth. He said these developments will strengthen Miri’s role as a key economic centre in northern Sarawak, while supporting the state’s development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030. Among those present were deputy minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia and Miri MP Chiew Choon Man; Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Councillor Kelvin Chia who represented Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting; and MCCCI chairman Ling Chiong Sing.

Lee (left) presents the cheque to Goh, as Henry (fourth right) and others look on. MIRI (March 16): Close cooperation between parents and schools is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment and ensuring the holistic development of students, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. “The success of a school does not depend solely on the efforts of teachers, but the support and active involvement of parents. “Strong cooperation, good communication and mutual respect between parents and teachers are key to the success of a school,” he said when officiating the SK St Joseph Miri Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) annual general meeting (AGM) last Saturday. He said the PTA plays an important role as the bridge between parents and the school, as well as a strategic partner in supporting the school’s various programmes and initiatives. “Such cooperation helps create a more conducive learning environment, and supports the overall development of students. We do not want to produce students who excel academically, but also individuals who are balanced in terms of physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual development.” He added that any issues or challenges between parents and the school should be addressed through open discussion, mutual understanding, and a spirit of consensus for the common good. Lee also encouraged parents to continue supporting programmes organised by the school, whether through moral support or contributions they are able to provide. He added the PTA could also play an important role in assisting the school in organising and financing the participation of students in competitions at higher levels. “Support should not only focus on academic achievements, but also on sports, co-curricular activities, and other programmes that can help build students’ confidence and potential,” he said. During the event, Lee also presented a RM10,000 allocation for the school to carry out its annual activities. Also present were SK St Joseph Miri headmaster Henry Edward Tarang and PTA chairman Goh Ser Seng.

Ting (front, seventh right), flanked by Augustine (on Ting’s right) and Cheong, joins others for a photo call in front of the centre. MIRI (March 15): St Columba’s Church here marked another milestone in its 103-year history with the establishment of its first Care Ministry Centre to support senior citizens in the community. The centre was officially launched by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, in the presence of former Assistant Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei The Rt Revd Solomon Cheong and The Revd Augustine Saidi. In his address yesterday, Ting said the initiative reflects the church’s commitment to caring for senior citizens, particularly those who spend long hours alone at home. “A centre like this provides a place for seniors to meet friends, share stories and enjoy companionship, especially when their children are busy with work,” he said. Ting, who is also the Piasau assemblyman, noted that meaningful interaction such as listening and simple conversations can have a therapeutic effect, as families today often have limited time to spend with elderly members. “Sometimes people just need someone to listen, and that alone can already be a form of therapy,” he said. The centre will offer various activities including light exercises, games, singing, spiritual sessions and social activities to promote both physical and mental wellbeing among senior citizens. Ting said such initiatives could help ensure that elderly individuals do not feel isolated, while shared activities could foster friendships and provide emotional support. Responding to a request for vertical vibration machines, used to help strengthen leg muscles, he pledged RM10,000 to purchase two units. He also commended the church for its community-based initiative and announced an additional RM8,000 to support the centre’s activities for senior citizens.

Chiew (right) and Yeo pose for the camera during the meeting. MIRI (March 14): Efforts to attract more South Korean tourists to Sabah and Sarawak were a key topic during a recent meeting between Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man and Ambassador of South Korea to Malaysia Yeo Seung-bae. Chiew said the meeting followed up on their first meeting in 2023 after the Asean Parliament Forum in Jeju Island, focusing on strategies to increase tourist arrivals, particularly to northern Sarawak including Miri. “Attracting more tourists to this region is one of my main priorities, and this discussion is an important step towards bringing more Korean visitors to northern Sarawak,” he said in a statement on Friday. He noted that South Korean travellers often seek destinations that offer a peaceful escape and value nature, making Sabah and Sarawak’s ecotourism offerings ideal. Highlighted attractions included Niah National Park, Lambir Hills National Park, and Gunung Mulu National Park, home to one of the world’s largest cave chambers. Chiew also emphasised Miri’s accessibility, with a 30 to 45-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu and multiple daily connections, making it an ideal extension for Korean tourists visiting Sabah. The ambassador shared insights on South Korea’s corporate incentive travel culture, presenting opportunities for Malaysian tour operators to develop packages targeting these high-value travellers. Discussions also touched on collaboration with South Korea’s entertainment and K-pop industry, including potential concerts in Miri. Additionally, Chiew welcomed news that South Korean producer Lee Sang Chan will film the feature movie ‘Distinct: Becoming Sarawak’ in the state, citing Sarawak’s harmony among diverse cultures, races, and religions. The project is expected to showcase Sarawak’s attractions to a wider global audience, particularly in South Korea.

Lee helps fit a helmet on a motorcyclist during the road safety campaign. MIRI (March 14): Rear-end collisions are the most common type of road accident in Sarawak, accounting for 28 per cent of all crashes recorded in the state, while human error remains the root cause of nearly nine out of every 10 incidents. State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said statistics released by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters showed that about 85 per cent of road accidents, from minor collisions to fatal crashes, stem from negligence and careless behaviour by road users. “Beyond rear-end collisions, loss of vehicle control due to excessive speed or skidding is the second most frequent cause at 24 per cent, followed by side-swipe collisions at junctions, which account for roughly 15 per cent of cases. “Head-on collisions and minor side scrapes made up the remainder, further reinforcing the pattern of driver-induced incidents,” he said. Locally, figures from the Traffic Police Station at Miri District Police Headquarters showed that 524 property-damage accidents were recorded in Miri between January and February this year. This marks an increase of 13 cases, or about 2.5 per cent, from 511 cases recorded in the same period last year. Fatal accidents claimed six lives over the two-month period, mirroring the toll recorded during the same stretch in 2025. Speaking during the Road Safety Campaign for Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 at a Petronas petrol station in Permyjaya on Friday, Lee urged motorists to exercise greater caution as the festive season approaches. “Traffic volumes typically surge during major celebrations such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Gawai, substantially elevating the risk of accidents for those who fail to practise safe driving habits. “Through this campaign, we want to remind all road users to return to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya safely. Leave safely and come back safely,” he said. During the campaign, the ministry distributed specially designed ‘duit raya’ packets carrying road safety messages, including reminders to wear seatbelts and helmets, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, obey traffic signals and adhere to speed limits. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Miri inspected 15,581 vehicles between January and March, issuing 3,010 notices for various traffic offences during the same period. The campaign was organised by the state Transport Ministry in collaboration with the JPJ, Royal Malaysia Police, the Sarawak Road Safety Council and the Miri Divisional Road Safety Committee. Also present were Miri district officer Siti Rohanie Yusof, JPJ Miri branch chief Yusuf Andan, and inspector G. Visvanathan Guna Cekeren.

Chiew (sixth left) and Mohd Roslan (sixth right) in a photocall with Motac personnel and stakeholders at the engagement session. MIRI (March 15): Homestay and Kampungstay operators in Sarawak generated RM9.2 million in income in 2025, marking a 37 per cent increase compared with RM6.7 million recorded the previous year. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man said the earnings came from 74 registered homestay clusters involving 924 operators with 1,902 rooms under the Malaysia Homestay Experience Programme (PPHM), as well as four Kampungstay clusters involving seven operators. He said the increase reflected the ministry’s continuous efforts to strengthen the tourism sector in the state, including human capital development among frontline tourism workers and licensed industry players. “Community participation in the sector has been encouraging, with involvement from both urban and rural areas,” he said in his speech at the engagement session between Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) and Sarawak tourism stakeholders and industry players here on Saturday. According to Chiew, the growth in revenue was also driven by higher visitor arrivals under PPHM. He noted that in 2024, Sarawak recorded 52,927 domestic visitors and 3,046 international visitors under PPHM, while in 2025 the figures rose to 65,892 domestic visitors and 3,832 international visitors. “This represents an increase of 24 per cent for domestic visitors and 25.8 per cent for international visitors in 2025 compared with the previous year,” he said. He added that the ministry had also undertaken various initiatives to further strengthen tourism in Sarawak, including upgrading tourism facilities, ecotourism sites and heritage locations. Chiew said that a total of 21 Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programmes (PPUN) from 2024 to 2025, amounting to RM4.6 million, have been allocated to the Sarawak government, including local authorities. “For 2026, the Sarawak Motac office has received 23 PPUN applications from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak. Apart from that, nine projects approved from the 11th to the 13th Malaysia Plans, totalling RM47 million, have been allocated to the Sarawak government for the construction of tourism facilities,” he said. On the engagement session, Chiew said it served as an important two-way platform to exchange views, align directions and strengthen strategic cooperation between the government and tourism, arts and culture stakeholders in Sarawak. He said the session involved participants from companies, associations, institutions and entrepreneurs, covering a range of tourism, arts and cultural matters, including traditional games, dance and martial arts. Chiew pointed out that this year would be a crucial year for the national tourism industry in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). To ensure the success of the campaign, he said the ministry, together with Tourism Malaysia, would continue to strengthen strategic cooperation with the government, private sector and non-governmental organisations. “The success of Visit Malaysia 2026 cannot be borne by the government alone. It requires the active participation and sustained commitment of all parties, including hotel operators, travel agents, airlines, tourism product operators and local communities,” he said. He stressed that the National Tourism Policy focuses not only on increasing visitor arrivals, but also on attracting quality visitors who stay longer and spend more, in order to build a more competitive tourism industry. “This includes a strategic shift towards experiential tourism, offering high-value products to encourage overnight stays, as well as strengthening community-based tourism. “Attention must also be given to readiness in welcoming domestic and international visitors, including good infrastructure, high standards of cleanliness and the development of new tourism products and special interest packages,” he added. Also present at the engagement session were senior director of Motac’s Domestic and Events Division Mohd Roslan Abdullah, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Rubiah Tul’adwiyah Md Yusof, and director of the Package Development Division Zuraini Abdul Ghani.

MIRI (March 15): The upgrading works on the road linking Logan Entassan to Benawa in Marudi are progressing well and are expected to ease long-standing access problems faced by villagers in the area. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the project involves upgrading a 4.2-kilometre stretch of road that has remained unrepaired for many years, making daily travel difficult for residents. “The upgrading works were carried out following requests from residents of Kampung Hizrah, as the road serves as the main access route for children travelling to SK Benawa and for students commuting to secondary schools in Marudi,” he said after inspecting the project site on Saturday. According to the Mulu assemblyman, the project was funded through an allocation of RM900,000 under the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) fund. Gerawat (standing sixth left) with residents of Kampung Hizrah during the site visit. He added that he has instructed the Public Work Department (JKR) to prepare a proposal to upgrade the road to a tarred standard, noting that the process would involve coordination with other agencies, including the Land and Survey Department. “As a people’s representative, my commitment is to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and their needs addressed,” he said. “While development may take time, we will continue to improve facilities step by step for the benefit of the people,” he added.

The State Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development said greater recognition and support should be given to women, particularly those serving in the healthcare workforce. “We must also recognise the many women within our healthcare workforce as they lead, care, make critical decisions and balance professional excellence with responsibilities at home,” she said. Rosey said this in her speech at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration organised by Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Miri yesterday. The Bekenu assemblywoman also highlighted the growing challenges faced by women today. Among the concerns, she said, are mental health issues, the rise in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, economic pressures on working mothers and single parents, as well as issues related to safety and digital wellbeing. “These challenges reflect the lived experiences of many women, including mothers who delay their own health check-ups to prioritise their children and healthcare workers balancing demanding professional duties with family responsibilities,” she said. She stressed that women’s health must remain a priority, encompassing not only on maternal care but also preventive screening, mental health support, reproductive health education and chronic disease management. “In a healthcare setting such as this, the message carries even greater meaning,” she said, adding that a “future-ready society” is one that values women’s health, safety, education and economic participation. Meanwhile, BMC Miri Medical Director Dr Richard Chen said the celebration not only recognises the achievements of women but also highlights the challenges they face in today’s environment. “Today, we celebrate not only the achievements of women, but also acknowledge the challenges many continue to face, from rising healthcare concerns and mental health pressures to work-life balance and the need for safe, supportive environments,” he said. Chen noted that the event’s theme, “Give to gain. Every story matters. Every woman counts,” reflects the experiences of many women encountered in healthcare settings. “Every day, we meet women who prioritise their families over their own health, working mothers balancing multiple responsibilities, and young women navigating stress in a rapidly changing world. Behind every statistic is a real story,” he said. He stressed that women’s healthcare extends beyond maternity services and includes preventive screening, mental health support, chronic disease management and access to quality and compassionate treatment. “As a healthcare provider, we are committed not only to treating illness but also to promoting awareness and early intervention,” he said. Chen said the collaboration between BMC, the Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) in organising the event reflects the importance of partnerships between private institutions and public agencies in advancing gender equality and family wellbeing. Also present was BMC Miri chairman Dr Matthew Kho Hion Woo.

Chiew (right) in a discussion with Ching regarding the possibility of reopening Coco Cabana. MIRI (March 9): The beaches here exhibit strong potential to be further developed into vibrant tourism destinations, capable of attracting visitors and becoming key business hubs. According to Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man, the city’s long coastline provides a natural advantage that should be able to position it alongside other well-known coastal tourism destinations such as Kota Kinabalu, Port Dickson and Langkawi. “Miri is a beautiful coastal city, and our beaches are wonderful places for people to take a stroll, relax and enjoy the sunset – among many other seaside activities. “This said, proper management and maintenance of these beaches are important to ensure that they continue to grow as must-visit attractions. “Enhancing their commercial value is also important, through the development of supporting amenities such as cafés, restaurants and retail outlets, as well as expansion of recreational offerings such as jet-skiing, snorkelling and banana boat rides. “All these would further boost the attractiveness of our beaches,” said Chiew. Chiew (right) with a worker of a new commercial development at Bakam Beach. Adding on, Miri MP cited Coco Cabana as an example of successful tourist attraction here, back during its heyday several years ago before its closure for renovation. “I sincerely hope that Coco Cabana would reopen one day.” In this regard, Chiew had recently arranged a meeting with Samling Group of Companies executive director Datuk Adrian Ching, where the former highlighted the need of reopening Coco Cabana. Chiew argued that reopening the place would provide Miri with another strong tourism product, especially in conjunction with the ongoing Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. In a related development, the deputy minister recently visited a new commercial development at the Bakam Beach area, which was nearing completion. “This area features private outlets, cafés and restaurants as well as hostels. “I would like to assure all that I strive to help boost tourism promotional efforts by connecting businesses there with the relevant agencies and stakeholders. “I also commend our entrepreneurs for their initiatives in creating innovative, enjoyable and high-quality tourism products in Miri,” said Chiew.

MIRI (March 9): The Sarawak government has allocated RM565 million to the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) since 2017, with RM70.9 million of the funds going to Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) churches across the state, said Datuk Gerawat Gala. The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) said the allocation for BEM had funded 639 church projects throughout Sarawak. “Our state government acknowledges and recognises the important role that churches play in nation building because the church teaches and champions values which promote healthy, peaceful, progressive, and harmonious communities,” he said when launching the book ‘Uncharted Waters: Memoirs of C Hudson Southwell’ here on Sunday. Gerawat pointed out the aid from Unifor for BEM churches across Sarawak does not include direct grants. He said these include RM10 million each for BEM Belaga, BEM Sungai Asap, and the BEM Centre in Batu Kawa, Kuching. “We sincerely hope that our BEM churches will continue to work closely with the state government in building a strong, united, and progressive Sarawak,” he said. Blair presents a signed copy of the book to Gerawat at the event. On the book, Gerawat said Southwell, who was born in 1900 and died in 1996, was a devoted missionary whose lifelong work in Borneo helped shape the development of Christian missions, particularly among the Orang Ulu communities in Baram. He said Southwell passed away in his homeland of Australia at the age of 96, leaving behind a lasting legacy through his writings and the church he helped establish. “If Southwell were alive today, he would be amazed to see how the seeds he planted many years ago have grown and multiplied far beyond his imagination,” he said. Gerawat also quoted figures from BEM Sarawak president Rev Bina Agong, who said there are currently 713 registered BEM churches and over 110,000 members in Sarawak. “In Sabah, there are 716 BEM churches and 79 in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said. He thanked book publisher and editor Rod Blair for recognising the importance of documenting Southwell’s life and ministry. Among those present at the book launch were BEM Sarawak secretary-general Stanley Sigar and BEM Miri chairman Pastor Loter Sakai.
