MIRI
CITY COUNCIL
Visitors To Miri City Council 2007
We have 18 groups in
2005 (possibly due to Miri just elevated into city in 2005) and
15 groups in 2006. The visits have helped to promote the popularity
of Miri especially the majority of the groups are government agencies.
The visits also help the local communities as, apart from hoteliers,
they will definitely patronize food outlets, souvenir shops and
so forth. The increasing groups of visitors coming to Miri indicate
that there is something here for them to learn. Most of the groups
coming to Miri would like to find out the Council's success and
know-how in carrying out the following programmes :-
- Local Agenda 21 programme (how we promote sustainable development
for Miri City i.e. the development that has taken place should
benefit the present community and it should be beneficial (sustainable)
to future generation.
- Landscaping and beautification programmes especially our nicely
landscaped and maintained urban parks. Miri City Fan Park has
been judged as the best urban park under the National Level
Landscape Competition held in 2001.
- Cleanliness in the city centre including the city centre.
We have adopted a system thereby the cleaning contracts for
road sweeping and litter picking in commercial centre and public
roads, are awarded to individual contractors (instead of one
single contract covering the whole of Miri City centre as practised
previously). This has ensured more effective monitoring and
supervision to their works. Do not undermine the capability
of these individual contractors, as they have their innovative
ways to do sweeping like the use of large palm leaves for road
sweeping (which is proven more effective than the use of broom).
- Sanitary Landfill System - after collecting the solid waste
or refuse from the households or commercial centres, the rubbish
is then sent to Council's Rubbish Transfer Station situated
14 km away from city centre for compacting before the bulk of
rubbish is being sent to Bekenu Sanitary Landfill, 65 km away
from Miri City for further treatment. Proper treatment will
ascertain the rubbish that has been dumped there will not cause
any environmental pollution. Apart from this, we also initiate
3R Buy Back Campaign which is being carried out on a regular
basis at Dewan Suarah Miri and Morsjaya Commercial centre. The
campaign encourages residents to practice reduce, reuse, recycle
of rubbish. Apart from this, the Council also permits one company
to sort out reusable and recyclable items at the sanitary landfill
before the rubbish is being finally treated. This attempt has
contributed to the Council's success of recovering 9.5% from
rubbish disposed and this is not far from the national target
of 11% by end of 2020. The percentage does not include the recovery
of scrapped metals.
- Tourism promotion, the Council is actively involved in promoting
Miri as one tourism destination. In this respect, various tourism
promotion brochures, VCD and booklet have been produced. Apart
from this, the Council also organizes Miri May Fest and Miri
City Day Celebration as the selling point to attract visitors
to Miri. The programme of Miri City Day Celebration is fixed
on and around 20th May each year but the events organised are
different each year so that this can induce people to come during
this period every year. We have taken the initiative to complement
the efforts of the relevant authorities of promoting tourism
as we believe the efforts will have an impact to turn Miri into
a more vibrant and exciting city full of active economic activities
and such trend will benefit all sectors in Miri eventually.
